Mask of comical fantasy
Review by Joe Rennison for the Camden New Journal
An adaptation of a Terry Pratchett book, this production certainly emulated the comic fantasy style of the author, and it is a credit to Stephen Briggs, the man responsible for the adaptation, that such a transition has been achieved so successfully.
The story revolves around the Opera Ghost of Ankh-Morpork Opera House, who has begun to ill off much of the cast. It is only when two witches begin to poke
their noses in that the mystery of the ghost is unravelled.
At times, the play attempts to convey some sort of moral message about an individual’s inner-being.
The cast convey the story well. That this was an entirely non-professional cast was not always obvious, and in the whole each character was portrayed with thought and consideration, holding the audience captive with their performance.
If you were thinking of spending an evening at the theatre this Christmas, you could do a lot worse than Maskerade.
