Carl is a 15 year-old American living in Paris in 1966. He learns about art, music, books,
life and love from his apparently poised and very attractive teacher, Claudie Melville.
She, however, is emotionally vulnerable, recovering from the break-up of her relationship
with a married colleague. And then there is Ruth, Claudie's wise-cracking American
neighbour, who has left her abusive husband and a child in America to pursue a career as
a classical violinist in Paris, and has man troubles of her own.
Madame Melville was originally performed at the Vaudeville Theatre in 2000, to
critical acclaim and was the first 'adult' stage vehicle for Macaulay Culkin, who played
Carl.
