After three successful years on the Artistic Team Dan Usztan is stepping down. Artistic Director Martin Mulgrew writes: I would like to thank him for all his hard work.
I am delighted to announce that James McKendrick will be taking up the vacant Assistant Artistic Director (AAD) position.
James McKendrick has been a Tower Theatre Company Member since 2013 and has acted in several productions including Much Ado About Nothing, The Return of the Marionettes, Largo Desolato and Dying For It. Elsewhere he has performed in shows at the Edinburgh, Brighton, Vault and Prague Fringe festivals, as well as in productions that transferred to Riverside Studios and the Orange Tree Theatre.
For the Tower, he has directed Kafka’s Dick and an acclaimed production of Trainspotting. Elsewhere, he has directed a trio of Jim Cartwright plays (Road, Two and Bed), and Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off. He also directed the critically acclaimed Work Makes You Free, which garnered several five and four star reviews and was lauded as a “highlight of the Vault Festival 2018” (Fringe Guru), before having a similarly successful run at the Rialto Theatre as part of Brighton Fringe 2019.
James’ appointment completes the new Artistic Team. Specific responsibilities allocated to the three AADs are :
- Karen Hope – Assistant Artistic Director with responsibility for the Studio workshop programme and, along with Jude Chalk, the schools work experience project
- Landé Belo – Assistant Artistic Director with responsibility for the Assistant Directors’ Scheme
- James McKendrick – Assistant Artistic Director with responsibility for rights
