A Passage to India

Q and A session on 8th February

We are delighted to announce that we have a fantastic panel of E. M Forster experts lined up for a Question and Answer session after the matinée on Saturday 8th February :

  • Professor Santanu Das, senior research fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, where he is now professor of modern literature and culture. Author of India, Empire and First World War Culture.
  • Dr. Hugh Stevens, Senior Lecturer at University College London, specialises in the history of homosexual identities. Hugh presented the paper Queer Edwardians: E.M Forster and D.H Laurence at the UCL festival of arts.
  • Professor Daniel Monk, professor of Law at Birkbeck, and member of the international E.M Forster society. Daniel published an article on E M Forster’s will, an overlooked posthumous publication.
  • And Ash Kotak, award winning playwright, director/producer and gay activist. Ash's debut play Hijra (Bush Theatre 2000) is a gay rom-com with serious political overtones.

It’s 1920s Chandrapore, and Adela Quested has accompanied her future mother-in-law, Mrs Moore, to India before committing to marriage with her son. Determined to see the ‘real India’ and shocked by the prejudiced attitudes they encounter at the ‘club’, the ladies readily accept when friendly Dr Aziz suggests an outing to the Marabar caves… after which fateful day nothing is ever the same again.

Written in 2002 for theatre company Shared Experience, Martin Sherman’s compelling adaptation of E.M Forster’s classic delivers this rich, multi-layered story through an imagistic theatrical language, in which the real and imagined often collide and the mysticism of India sings.
