A rehearsed reading of Ade Solanke’s brilliant and humorous play about the black Tudor and royal trumpeter, John Blanke.
England 1539 and Henry VIII is searching for a fourth wife …. With Cromwell and Norfolk vying for his favour with their candidates, whose word can he trust? Perhaps his favoured court trumpeter, John Blanke, who has returned to Hampton Court as a feast is mounted to seal the deal for Anne of Cleves ….. Blanke is the only black Tudor for whom we have both a name and an identifiable image. Ade Solanke’s brilliant and humourous play will be performed by Tower actors in this rehearsed reading directed by Simona Hughes.
The event is followed by a Q&A with Ade who is a Hackney-based, British-Nigerian award-winning playwright, screenwriter and academic. Her acclaimed début play, Pandora’s Box, sold out at the Arcola Theatre in 2012 and toured nationally in 2014.
