The Bacchae

July 8, 2021 @ 7:30 pm 8:30 pm

Love and Survival

A staged reading of Euripides’ ancient Greek tragedy.

A vengeful androgynous trickster deity, familial bonds and bodies torn asunder, booze-addled mad and orgiastic rites in a lush woodland, passion and release – The Bacchae distills a brew infused with the essence of theatre’s unique promise of spectacle unchecked. No surprise: this near-2,500-year-old tragedy stars the ancient Greek god of wine, insanity, and – curiously – of theatre.
Watch as Pleasure Bedlam Ltd. – an offshoot of Arcola Theatre’s renegade Mental Health Company, spawned over Zoom – mobilises theatre’s Dionysian power to bring people together, and to forge communities, in the flesh.

Cast : Michelle Hanks, Alain English, Brandon Thorne, Sasha Bond, Paul Singer, Marc Llobet and Avi Mendelson
Directed by Jessica McKenna and Avi Mendelson
