Gabriel Moreno : The Year of the Rat

The Launch of his new album : Friday February 4th at 7.30

Gabriel Moreno is a Gibraltarian poet and singer songwriter who has been performing for the past twenty years in Gibraltar, Chile, Peru, Italy, Spain, Germany, USA and the UK. In December 2019 he won the Introducing Stage at the Great British Folk Festival. He has ten poetry books published by Omicron and Orion in both Spanish and English and has three albums under his belt. His folk songs are both poetic and political, mining the same rich seams as Leonard Cohen, Fabrizio De Andre and Georges Brassens. What characterises his work is the blending of languages and cultures. This stems primarily from his bilingualism and his many travels across Europe and the American continent.
After releasing three albums, Love and Decadence, Farewell Belief and Whiskey With Angels, and his EP Poetical Resistance which he toured round the UK and Europe, Moreno returns as a burning force of nature with this brand new LP called The Year Of The Rat where he explores the struggles and revelations of the arduous period of lockdown and the confinement from 2020-2021. 2020 was the year of the rat according to the Chinese horoscope and Moreno expertly uses lyrics derived from his poetical studies and crafted tunes to explore the struggles of this year for musicians and other working folk. Just like the rat, Moreno has had to employ shrewdness and ingenuity to survive this period and come out with new compelling songs. The album includes collaborations with several acclaimed musicians of the London and Barcelona underground music scene including Ned Cartwright (Heartworn Highways) Adam Beattie (Pica Pica, Band Of Burns) Fiona Bevan, Pearl Fish, Pablo Yupton, DG Solaris amongst others.

This evening is an event to launch the new album.

“ A seductive, acoustic, outpouring of hope in a dark place, Gabriel Moreno looks to the UK’s future with a
humble, sanguine spark of light. For fans of Bob Dylan, Beans on Toast, Frank Turner.”
(Mitch Mosk, Atwood Magazine, New York)

“Gabriel Moreno is one of the last true bastions of musical purity. In a world where commerce grapples at everything, a listen to the Poetical Resistance EP is a refreshing exercise in grounding. This is music for music’s sake; songs written for the purpose of existing, in the chords of tenderness, romance and community.” (Tristan Gatward, Loud and Quiet Magazine)

“I have followed Gabriel Moreno for some years now and still remain in awe of his imagery. A published poet, he has been a devotee of the late great Leonard Cohen, more in the sense of using a guitar to deliver a poem in a performance than simply to copy him. To see Gabriel up close in concert is to be spellbound by phrases that you wish you’d crafted yourself.” (Joe Adamberry, Gibraltar Chronicle)

“An offshoot of Leonard Cohen and Neil Diamond. I love it.” (Cerys Mathews, BBC6 England)
