Tower Theatre Directors' Workshops

These workshops are designed for directors but are also open to actors, designers or anyone who is interested in theatre and exploring different approaches to performance and rehearsal.

All the workshops will take place at the Tower Theatre, 16 Northwold Road, Stoke Newington, London, N16 7HR.

How to Book : Places are limited to 12 participants. In cases where workshops are full we will also offer 4 spectator places which allow you to observe the workshop from the side but not participate. To book your place please contact Angharad Ormond (Assistant Artistic Director).

Price : Free for Tower Company Members or Friends of the Tower
Non-members: Participant - £10, Spectator - £5. Alternatively, you can join now as a member here and attend the workshops for free, as well as having access to a whole range of other benefits.

Saturday 13th October from 11.00 to 1.00

This fun and hands-on workshop will introduce participants to a range of warm up games and exercises to enhance teambuilding and prepare the body and voice for rehearsal and performance. Sharing techniques used by professional companies, this workshop aims to help performers reach the WHOLE of the audience.

Peta is a long-standing Tower member with numerous acting and directing credits to his name. He most recently directed Arcadia at the Bridewell Theatre and was part of the Tower Team in the RSC's A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Barbican and Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Summer 2016, playing Snug the Joiner.

Saturday 10th November from 11.00 to 2.00

This workshop will explore the importance of scene changes, both artistically and practically. There will be discussion and practical examples of different approaches that can be utilised depending on the style of the play. This workshop would be beneficial to directors, actors and designers to help build confidence and develop ownership whilst working collaboratively with the whole production team.

Colin has been a Tower member since 1985 with an impressive range of credits as actor, director, musical director, sound designer and composer; most recently appearing as Max Brod in Kafka's Dick Upstairs at the Gatehouse and composing the Oceania National Anthem for 1984 at Theatro Technis.

Saturday 8th December from 11.00 to 2.00

This experiential workshop will explore some of the principles of Rudolf Laban's theory of Movement Observation and Analysis with a particular focus on his theories of Effort and Space. The aim of this workshop is to give participants a set of versatile tools that they can use when creating characters, moving on stage or simply to enhance their awareness of the moving body.

Brenda is a Movement and Somatic Psychotherapist. She brings 20 years of mental health practice to the theatre, enhancing performers experiences of embodiment through physical exploration of main themes, and by bringing greater awareness to the nuances of character physicality. Credits include Movement Director for Kindertransport at Theatro Technis and Upstairs at the Gatehouse; Assistant Director for 1984 at Theatro Technis.
