Degrees for women? What an idea.
The University of Cambridge, 1896. At Girton College, the first institution in Britain to admit female students, four brilliant young women study ferociously. Between the trials and tribulations of education, love and adolescence, the story follows these bright scholars as they fight to be recognised as equal. As they match their male peers, grade for grade, they are denied their rightful degrees, and instead labelled “blue stockings”.
First produced at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2013, Jessica Swale’s magnificent debut earned an Evening Standard nomination for Most Promising Playwright. This provocative and deeply moving drama is an inspiring tribute to the pioneers who fought for equality, changing the face of education forever.
