Love and Survival

Strange Meeting
As the world recovers from a global pandemic a young woman makes her weekly pilgrimage to Abney Park cemetery. A visit of remembrance, or is there something more that keeps bringing her back?
Created by Colin Guthrie

The walk is free and is based in and around Abney Park cemetery so can be enjoyed at any time during the cemetery’s opening hours. All you need to enjoy the walks are your phone, some headphones and an open mind! The walks are hosted on the Echoes App, which can be downloaded for free on both iOS (here) and Android (here). The QR code shown here gives the link to the walk, or click here.

The walk starts on the pavement outside the Stoke Newington Church Street entrance to Abney Park (N16 0AY)

As far as we know, geo-located audio drama is an entirely new thing. We’re delighted that you’ve chosen to join us in exploring this exciting new art form. We’ve combined the techniques of radio drama with technology that allows us to tailor our stories to your physical location. The things you see, the places you visit and the way you move between them become part of the story. And we’re lucky to have found the perfect setting in atmospheric Abney Park.

We expect that you will be able to follow the directions in the plays about when and where to walk, and when to pause somewhere, but GPS location is not always absolutely reliable and the cemetery can sometimes be difficult to navigate. So we’ve put together some hints, tips and materials that we hope you’ll find useful :

Before setting off

  • you may find it helpful to download the map of the route for the play you have selected, so that you can refer to it if you run into difficulties.
  • we recommend that you use the Echoes app to download the play you have selected. The opening screen for each play in Echoes gives you the option to stream or download it. Streaming generally works well, but we think downloading the play will give you the best experience.

In Abney Park

  • To enjoy these immersive plays fully, you will need to give them your full attention. Once the play has started, do not use your phone for any other purpose, including taking photographs, reading and sending messages.
  • Try to walk at a steady pace. There’s no need to rush, but don’t dawdle either!
  • If audio playback disappears, it may be that GPS isn’t registering your location accurately. Try pressing the ‘locate me’ button in the map displayed on the Echoes app, which may fix it. Alternatively, if it looks as though you have nearly walked into one of the pale blue shapes on the map, try walking into it until it turns dark blue, which may start the audio playback.
  • If you are interrupted for any reason, you may be able to use the Echoes app to pause and then restart the audio, but you will not be able to return to an earlier point in the story.
  • As a last resort, tap the three horizontal bars in the top left corner of the Echoes app, then select ‘stop walk’. You can then reload the play and use the echoes map to return to the last blue shape you walked through. The play will restart from that point.
